What Can Fibromyalgia Therapy Do for Me?

Fibromyalgia is a medical condition associated with chronic fatigue, memory problems, mood issues, difficulty sleeping, and ubiquitous musculoskeletal pain. The symptoms of this disorder can be worsened by other medical conditions, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, anxiety, tension headaches, lupus, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Women are more prone to developing fibromyalgia than their male counterparts. If you have this condition, the good news is fibromyalgia therapy exists.

The Causes and Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

There are many causes of fibromyalgia. It is believed that genetics play a big role in the development of fibromyalgia. The condition can be passed on to family members, and a mutation in the genetic code may make some individuals extremely susceptible to the disorder. Another cause of fibromyalgia is emotional or physical trauma. Getting into a car accident or grieving over a loved one are types of distress that can trigger fibromyalgia. The third cause of this condition is the contraction of certain infections, like hepatitis C and Epstein-Barr virus.

There are several hallmark symptoms of fibromyalgia. The first symptom is bodywide pain. The painful feelings are often constant, chronic and described as a dull ache. The pain can occur on both sides of the entire body. The second symptom of fibromyalgia is fatigue. Individuals may feel tired even after sleeping for an extended amount of time. Or they may wake up often due to feelings of pain, and this can cause feelings of fatigue. Another symptom is problems with cognitive functioning. This side effect is also known as “fibro fog”. Cognitive impairments include the inability to concentrate or pay attention to the task at hand.

Fibromyalgia Therapy Options

There are several different types of therapies that can be used to help treat fibromyalgia. It is very important to treat the symptoms of fibromyalgia because the person’s quality of life will be greatly improved. One effective fibromyalgia therapy option is self-care. There are specific activities that a person can do themselves to help alleviate the symptoms. With that being said, the best type of fibromyalgia therapy includes self-care in addition to professional treatment that aims to address the underlying conditions.
