Insomnia is a complex issue that can be affected by an array of factors: hormonal imbalance, neurotransmitter imbalance, stress and environmental factors to name a few. At The Guyer Institute, we take a root cause approach to determine the issue behind those sleepless nights. Neurotransmitter levels can be checked via a simple urine kit, and hormonal levels can be evaluated with an in-office blood draw.
Once the results are in, Dr. Guyer creates a treatment plan to help restore balance. Fortunately, several over-the-counter, yet effective remedies are available. 1. GABA is the acronym for the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid. GABA acts as the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain as it blocks the action of excitatory neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, helping to create a sedative effect. 2. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and the metabolic precursor to serotonin which has sedative effects. 3. Phosphotidyl Serine is a phospholipid that works by regulating cortisol spikes that often keep people awake at night. This supplement typically works best for patients who can fall asleep but not stay asleep.
If hormone replacement is merited, Dr. Guyer can prescribe bio-identical hormone replacement. The term bioidentical refers to utilizing hormone replacement therapy that is identical to what the body creates. Many physicians have switched to the bioidentical approach, given the observed clinical superiority and lack of side effects. In addition, preparations of this type can be much more cost-effective for many individuals.
