So you are a little older and gained a few unwanted pounds (or 30). While the excess weight can be frustrating to say the least, you don’t need to abandon hope. There are options!
Certainly, our metabolism can slow down as we age. Fortunately, the basic biochemical reality occurs at the cellular level and is amenable to change by implementing strategies that restore optimal body composition. Put simply: “Burn more calories faster.”
To achieve this goal, I have found some viable options in our practice to help you achieve optimal results. These interventions preclude integrating a reasonable diet and regular exercise program into the daily regimen.
Hormone Balance
As we age, our metabolic hormone levels can decline to within the deficient range. When deficient, you may find that energy levels decline while weight starts to incline. People who are low in human growth hormone (HGH) often feel fatigued and gain weight easily. A recent study of HGH replacement therapy showed a 14 percent reduction in body fat—without exercise! Other hormones such as thyroid, testosterone, and DHEA also play a pivotal role in metabolic regulation and should be checked and monitored by a health care professional.
Nutritional Supplements
Nutraceuticals involved in metabolism such as conjugated linoleic acids (CLA), carnitine, chromium, alpha lipoic acid, and biotin boost metabolism and help in weight loss. Alpha lipoic acid, biotin, and chromium work synergistically to stabilize glucose levels to prevent spikes in cortisol associated with abdominal fat. These nutraceuticals also help prevent sugar cravings associated with spikes in glucose levels.
Thermogenics/Weight Loss Medications
Some compounds or combinations of compounds possess decidedly thermogenic effects that increase cellular metabolic activity. Synergistic formulas of caffeine (and its derivatives) and “ephedra-like” compounds are often included in metabolism enhancement products. While these compounds can work in select individuals, they also have many side effects. Certainly, thermogenic aids are best utilized when under a physician’s guidance.
HCG
HCG can often be the “silver bullet.” Although a 20-year-old therapy for weight loss, HCG injections regained popularity, largely due to Kevin Trudeau’s cable TV advertising for his book The Weight Loss Cure extolling the virtues of HCG. This therapy is unique in that it allows the body to burn “fat” as fuel and reset its metabolic rate. In my clinical practice, I have observed HCG works when other approaches fail.
By exploring and incorporating today’s available options, you can step firmly onto the path of permanent weight loss and renewed vitality.
